"Let us concentrate on the positive things that surround us every
day, the sunshine, the people, the beauty, the progress. Constantly
criticising our country can only do harm - for you personally, your
personal feeling of happiness and well-being, and for the country that
you know from the bottom of your heart that you love, otherwise you
wouldn't be here." - Guy Lundy
Local businessman Guy Lundy gave us an idea. South
Africans can be a critical bunch, but deep down they all agree: they want
to be able to feel proud of their country and its people. Americans are
renowned for their patriotism. They rarely denigrate their country - no
matter what problems they might have. We have
decided to "borrow" a
little bit of their pride and adapt it for South Africa.
So here it is: South Africa's own, unique Pledge of Allegiance.
I pledge allegiance to the flag and constitution
of the Republic of SA and to the freedom for
which it stands, one nation united in its
diversity, with quality of life for all.
South African Coat
is written in the (now extinct) Khoisan language
of the /Xam people and literally means: diverse
people unite. It addresses each individual
effort to harness the unity between thought and
action. On a collective scale it calls for the
nation to unite in a common sense of belonging
and national pride - Unity in Diversity.
Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.
Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.
Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
God bless Africa,
Lift her horn on high,
Hear our prayers.
God bless us
Who are Your people.
God save our nation,
End wars and strife.
South Africa, South Africa.
Ringing out from our blue heavens,
from our deep seas breaking round;
Over everlasting mountains
where the echoing crags resound.
Sounds the call to come toghether,
and united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom
in South Africa, our land.
